KCW summer day 3 : Swaddle for coming baby

Do you count swaddle blankets as a clothes? I'm not sure but these are what I did for my up coming little girl during this kids clothes week.

First is the snuggler swaddler which I made from free pattern of Lotta Jansdotter. This pattern is one of project in her book. But she also offer this pattern for free download here. The original version suits for cooler weather so, I only made it with double gauze and muslin to go along with our always summer weather.

Another is very simple. I bought the super soft double gauze from Miss Matatabi shop and fall in love with them! I can't made a decision to cut fabric to pieces. End up is I use the whole yard to make a blanket. Just sew another layer of muslin with that double gauze. Easy as it sounds but I'm sure that I will get the good use of this blanket.

KCW Summer 2014 : Tiered kid art-like dress

Hi all. I took an advantage from my location to start KCW summer 2014 earlier than your guys in U.S. or Europe. Here is what I done for this season...

The Tiered dress, made from kid art-like linen. Highly twirlability!

Tiered kid art-like dress

As you may know that this summer KCW has a theme call "Kid ART" and my girl coincidence selected this linen which looks like her own art pieces. We both happy together.

Pattern from Happy homemade, Sew Chic Kids

The pattern is from Happy homemade Sew Chic Kids, pattern F : Tiered Dress (same pattern also available in tiered top). It is easy to sew. I've changed hemming to flower bias and used the big ribbon to make a sling.

It did pass the twirly test!

The girl love airily feeling of linen and the dress was pass her twirly test. Perfect for summer!

Perfect for summer 

I have to stop making dress for my 4 years girl and start to make something for my little kicker who is due in a next couple of week. But sewing for big girl is so fun!

That smile make me want to sew more and more dress for her!

I plan to sew some basic summer outfits and swaddle blankets for my little one. What do you sew for your newborn? Is it possible to sew after you got the baby? I'm afraid that I will have no spare time to make anything, I'm never good at time management.

At week #36.... I'm excited to meet my little girl!

Let's start the summer sewing!

My FLIP creation : Charlie's angel romper

The Zonen 09: Charlie was voted by FLIP series fans (including me) to be a kick off for this summer. I love its collar at first sight and want to keep this element as is. My plan A was to make it a racer back dress with knit fabrics. Unfortunately after cutting fabrics to pieces, I'm not happy with the color combination from my limited knit stash. So, I went to plan B : make it with lovely woven fabrics.

From top to Romper (again!)

With not much time left, I digged down into my fabric stash and found the left over fabric from my first post for FLIP' June last year. What will suit for this entry than celebrating the first year anniversary of my blog with the same fabric.

The pattern is versatile and great to work with. What changes I have made are:

• Using woven instead of knit
• Adding the zipper on front bodice
• Changing from top to romper
• Cut the back bodice to be a racer back

What will suit for summer than the racer back design?

Here is not only hot but a lot of raining lately but I can't wait any longer to take a picture. So, we went out after evening rain to took all these shots.

The light is not perfect for taking photo (as well as my skill) but we managed to got some usable images. And the girl had huge fun playing in the park after the rain gone.

I glad that I've changed my mind and made her romper instead of the dress. She can play easier in this romper.

Run around romper : My version for growing up girl

Unbelievable! Times came and gone so fast and then I've been blogging for 1 year. I started here with FLIP this pattern series, my first post ever. Which I created girlie short with suspender from adorable Bubble shorts by E&E pattern, the creation that I'm so in love with but my girl is out grow them already.

Back to this month business, the pattern to be FLIP is Run around romper from The Cottage Mama. Have you ever made something from cottage mama's pattern? Following her instruction, Everything comes out so neat and beautiful. I have made two garments, the shortcake romper here and the modified classic A-line here. I've learn a lot from sewing those two patterns.

Flip "the run around romper" pattern

This Run around romper pattern is available from size 6 month-6 year, which including  my 4 and half years old size. But I want to make it in growing up looks with self-toilet ability. Here is what I have done to complete my missions.

Lace up the zipper and expose it on the romper front

I closed both of the shoulder straps and added the exposed zipper at the front of romper instead. By attaching lace to the both side of the zipper and then follow tutorial for exposed zipper installation by Tasha Early's blog here. Now my girl can take on and off the romper by herself easily.

Butterfly lace on her back!

The butterfly lace has been attached to the back of romper. It has a see-through effect but you may not see it clearly through because the girl was wearing light blue cami inside the romper

I was also down-sizing the pattern in every dimensions, lower the neck line, enlarge the arm holes and did change the hem shape. Do you think these changes made the romper looks grow up and girlier?

I'm so happy with the result and took a lot of photo of the girl at her favorite tree.(sorry for load of photo. ;) 

The girl is also happy as she can run and climb and play (and manage her toilet time) freely with her new romper.

Hand smock summer dress: PR&P spring 2014#week4

Here's come the last week of Project Run&Play, the most difficult theme of all(for me), the signature style.

I've a hard time making decision what to make. Then the harder time to finished and blog it on time. 

By a little free time, I want to create a hand smock dress. The dress was done on the night before our family trip. So, I have to took all photo during the trip and now I am editing them and blogging by my iPhone.

This dress is made from The Sally dress pattern by Very Shannon. It's cute and comfy. I made it my style by adding the smock on the front bodice of the dress and attach the cute owl appliques on both pockets.

This type of smocking would looks better on clean polkadot fabric. It will create a petal like from binding 4 dots together. Mine is a bit too busy but I still love it as it  turned out.

This is a mini-how to for this smocking. Start by marking sign on the dots. Then put the needle from wrong side of fabric at no.1. Pull the thead on right side of fabric and put the needle down on no.2. Then up on no.3 and down on no.4 and so on and so on. When down on no.8, pull all the thread together and secure the thread at the wrong side of fabric. Move to the next group four dots along your designed area.

The owl applique looks cute, right? I'd love to take the compliment but I didn't creat them myself. I found them as an iron on applique at nearby craft store. ;)

Sorry for too much of photo on this post. I've just love how the dress turned out and can't resist to post them. It was approved by the girl too. And I hope you would like it as well.

KCW April 2014 : The twirly jelly rolls skirt

This is official 5th day of KCW April 2014 but it's my actual 1st day to start any sewing for my kid in this week. Here's the result.

 I let the girl select which jelly rolls she want for her skirt. She selected the polka dot mixed one and asked for skirt that she can twirl in.

It did pass the twirlability test

The last tier of the skirt made from 5 strips of fabric. I've connected all short end of 5 strips together and run the very long roll on my little ruffle foot. Then attached it with the next tier, running on ruffle foot and so on and so on. The top tier was measurement of my girl's hip plus extra inches for comfortable. The last step is to let the girl select elastic band and attached it to the skirt. (I didn't hem the skirt, just used the pinking sheers. Fact is, handle the pinking sheers along the 220" length (44"x 5's) of skirt's hem is not easy as I thought) 

It's colorful, isn't it?

 It's not difficult project, just a bit of time consuming and a lot of ruffles to handle. I would love to did more delicate hemming but too lazy. What do you do when you have to finished the twirly skirt hem without the serger?

Coloring page dress # Project Run and Play season 9 sew along

I found this awesome idea at Welcome to the Mouse House last year and lucky enough to found this TIDNY fabric at Ikea store nearby. So I can make my version of coloring page dress for the girl.

My coloring dress from the Norah dress pattern

We trown in the coloring party. Each mommy made something from this fabric and let the kids color them. We have got some dresses, tops for girls and drawstring bags for boys. For my girl, I used the Norah dress and Tunic pattern which is the good frame for this project.

My girl is more than happy with her work (others kid as well). All of them very proud of themselves, so do moms!

I took the photo of her in this dress after many times of laundry. The dress was get worn very often. You may notice the color was fade a bit.

We plan to make another party in the near future, maybe the easy batik party. It would be nice if you can share the idea. We are during summer break. Any activity to entertain the kids would help the moms a lot.
